Catnip is a medicinal plant from the mint family, that is most commonly associated with its effects on our cat overlords :)

Its dried leaves and flowers can be used to brew tea, which have been traditionally used for treating conditions such as insomnia, anxiety and headaches. Catnip roots can be used in a similar fashion, though they serve as a mild stimulant rather than having a soothing effect.

Each pack contains 5 grams of seeds, with an average germination rate of 50%. Catnip is a perennial plant and will display higher germination rate with seed stratification, or cold treatment. Seed stratification refers to the mimicking of the plants' natural conditions in order to break dormancy and germinate.

For catnip, seed stratification can be performed by placing the seeds in the freezer overnight, to stimulate the frost or winter conditions. Subsequently, the seeds can also be soaked in cool water for about 24 hours, then sown in potting mix. Keep the pot in a warm and sunny spot, and keep the soil moist. The catnip seeds should germinate within 5 to 10 days.

  • Scientific Name: Nepeta cataria
  • Pre-soaking: Not required, but soaking may improve germination rates
  • Seed Origin: USA
